A form of intaglio printmaking in which a plate (typically of metal) is coated with some manner of ground, i. E. A substance that resists the action of an acid that is used to incise the plate where the ground has been removed in order to make an image. Aquatint etching uses a ground in the form of a fine powder to make grey tones, the technique of dry-point, akin to engraving, is also often applied to etched plates.
