A 100-meter long, stranded, sounding wire, graduated at 25 meter intervals, and used to measure the distances between offshore control buoys during a hydrographic survey.
Industry:Earth science
The volume of earth to be added or removed between two cross sections is assumed to be the average area of the two cross sections, times the distance between them.
Industry:Earth science
Anything exactly opposite to something else. In particular, that point on the Earth which is 180° from a given place.
Industry:Earth science
Terrain characterized by a very fine network of drainage, with short, steep slopes and narrow ridges between valleys. Vegetation is usually sparse.

(1) The difference between the greatest value of a quantity and its average value. Distinguished from range, which is the difference between the greatest value and the least value.
(2) The angle, at an observer, measured in a horizontal plane from east or west to a celestial body. The term is used in this sense only for bodies whose centers are on the celestial horizon, and is prefixed with E if the body is rising and W if it is setting. It is given the prefix N or S to agree with the body's declination.

A set of arrays of mathematical quantities, together with a set of rules for manipulating the arrays in such a way that the results are the same as if the quantities had been elements of matrices. Array algebra has no particular advantage over matrix algebra in a mathematical sense. It does, however, allow the elements to be grouped more efficiently for mechanical computation.

(1) The longest line that can be drawn thru the center of an ellipse or ellipsoid to the figure. (2) Any one of the set of lines of greatest length that can be drawn thru the center and from one side to the other of a spheroid. It is usually referred to as a major axis or an axis in the equatorial plane if the set contains more than one such line. Note that the major axis may also be the axis of rotation.
